A Real Family Guide by 5 Co Creations
Let’s be honest—when most people hear “Disney World,” they immediately think expensive, overwhelming, long lines, and not worth it.
But here’s the truth:
Disney done wrong is exhausting and overpriced.
Disney done right is one of the best family experiences you’ll ever have.
And the difference comes down to planning, mindset, and knowing a few key strategies.
We’re a family of five. We don’t have unlimited budgets, and we don’t have time to waste.
So if we’re doing Disney…
👉 We’re doing it right.
1. Don’t Overspend on Tickets
Most people make their first mistake before they even step foot in the park.
The move is simple:
Skip Park Hopper unless you’re a Disney veteran. Focus on one park per day and buy your tickets in advance whenever possible.
Trying to bounce between parks sounds great, but in reality, you’ll waste hours traveling and feel rushed the entire day.
Simple is better. One park. One plan. Done right.
But here’s something a lot of people don’t realize:
If you watch Disney’s website and follow their social channels, they are constantly running promotions and limited-time offers.
You can also find discounted tickets through trusted sources like Costco or reputable online ticket providers.
A little patience and research here can save you a significant amount before your trip even starts.
2. Stay ON Property (Do Disney the Right Way)
This might go against what you’ve heard—and that’s okay.
A lot of people try to save money by staying off property. The logic is always the same: “It’s cheaper.”
But let’s be real…
Did saving $100 a night really make the difference in whether you could go to Disney World?
If you’re going to do Disney… then go all in on Disney.
Staying on property isn’t just about convenience—it’s about the experience.
When you stay at a Disney resort:
The magic doesn’t stop when you leave the park
Transportation is built in
Everything feels immersive, easy, and intentional
And here’s the part most people overlook:
You’re going to want time to relax.
Those slower mornings, pool days, and reset moments hit completely different when you’re still inside the Disney bubble.
That’s what you’re paying for—not just a place to sleep, but a full experience.
Don’t cut corners on the part of the trip that ties everything together.
3. Learn Lightning Lane (Don’t Guess)
This is where most people get it wrong.
Lightning Lane is Disney’s system that allows you to skip long lines—but only if you use it correctly.
The key is simple:
👉 Book your next ride immediately after you use one
Think of it like stacking reservations throughout the day.
If you don’t understand this system ahead of time, you’ll spend your day waiting in lines while others are walking right past you.
Master this—and everything else gets easier.

4. Be Smart About Food (This Is a Big One)
Food is one of the fastest ways to blow your budget at Disney—and most families don’t even realize it until it’s too late.
Here’s how to do it right:
When you land in Orlando, stop at a grocery store—or better yet, do a Target pickup.
Don’t go crazy. You’re not stocking your house.
Think simple:
Breakfast items
Easy lunch/snack options
Enough for about 3–4 days (even on a longer trip)
Now here’s the play:
Morning
Eat breakfast in your room.
Quick, easy, and you’re out the door without spending $50+ before your first ride.
Midday
You’ve got two options:
Eat what you bought
Or grab something quick and affordable (yes—even the on-property McDonald’s)
Either way—you’re saving a ton.
Dinner = Your Night Out
Dinner is your experience.
We always plan dinner at night, and we don’t try to grind the parks from sunup to sundown (more on that coming up… because that’s actually the key to the entire trip).
👉 Spend at least 2 nights at Disney Springs
Eat there. Walk around. Grab drinks. Shop a little. Enjoy it.
The other nights?
Dinner in the park
Or off resort for something different
But there’s one thing you NEED to do:
👉 Book ONE character dining experience
Yes—it’s expensive.
Yes—it’s probably overpriced.
But it’s worth it.
Because when your kids see their favorite characters up close…
You’ll see something you won’t forget.
And the truth is—you’ll light up too.
5. Build in Rest (This Is the Secret Most People Miss)
This is where most Disney trips fall apart.
Kids get tired. Parents get frustrated. Meltdowns happen.
And it’s usually because people try to go nonstop—park after park, sunup to sundown.
That’s not how you do Disney right.
Here’s our exact method:
👉 Park for 1 (maybe 2) days max
👉 Then take a full rest day at the resort
👉 Then back to the park for 1–2 days
👉 Then rest again
Repeat that pattern.
Those rest days are everything.
You sleep in a little, hang by the pool, relax, reset—and actually enjoy where you’re staying.
Now, have we ever done two parks in one day?
Yes—but only in a very specific way:
👉 Animal Kingdom in the morning
👉 Then EPCOT or Hollywood Studios at night
Animal Kingdom is usually a shorter day, so this combo works if you plan it right.
But outside of that?
We don’t push it.
Because the goal isn’t to survive Disney…
👉 It’s to enjoy it.
6. Rope Drop (Use It… Don’t Abuse It)
Rope Drop can be powerful—but it’s not something you need to do every day.
Yes, the first couple hours of the park have the shortest lines.
Yes, you can knock out a lot early.
But here’s the problem…
People turn Rope Drop into a grind.
Waking up before sunrise every single day, rushing out the door, stressing before the day even starts.
That’s not the move.
Use Rope Drop strategically—maybe once or twice during your trip for key parks or must-do rides.
But don’t build your entire trip around it.
Because if you’re doing Disney right…
You’re not chasing rides.
You’re enjoying the experience.
7. The Ultimate Key to Doing Disney Right
This is it.
This is the difference between a miserable trip… and a magical one.
👉 Act like you’ve been before.
👉 And act like you’re coming back in 6 months.
Go into your trip with this mindset:
“We might ride 2 rides today… we might ride 8. Either way, we’re going back to the room, we’re showering, and we’re going to have a great dinner tonight.”
Because you’re not trying to do it all.
And that’s where most people get it wrong.
What’s more miserable than spending thousands of dollars—and I mean thousands—just to wake up before the sun rises every day trying to “rope drop” everything?
For what?
To sprint through the parks, stand in hour-long lines, and end the day exhausted?
Do you actually know how to use Lightning Lane?
If not—go back and read that section again.
Here’s the truth:
👉 Who cares if you ride 2 rides or 8 rides?
👉 You’re coming back.
👉 Today is about enjoying today.
Not stressing about tomorrow.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” – Matthew 6:34
And here’s the part people don’t want to hear—but need to:
👉 Buy Lightning Lane.
Yes, it costs more.
But do you want to enjoy Disney… or survive it?
If you’re doing this right, you should never be waiting in a line longer than 30 minutes.
Why would you?
You’re coming back, remember?
Don’t try to conquer Disney.
Experience it.
Because when you slow it down and do it the right way…
That’s when it actually becomes magical.
